As an entrepreneur, educator, changemaker, son, husband, and father, I’ve struggled to find harmony between these different roles over the years. But, with practice, perseverance, and determination, I’ve learnt that developing a balanced mindset and approach to life is not an impossibility.
While it is quite easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle of running a successful business, it is essential to stop and make time for your family, friends, and loved ones. Read on to learn how to strike the perfect balance between work and family in 2022.
Trust and Delegate
The first thing you need to do as an entrepreneur in 2022 is to get rid of the misguided notion that you need to do everything yourself. Not only is this an impossible and unsustainable practice for your business but it can negatively affect your physical and mental health in the long run.
Fortunately, I quickly realized that I could rely on my talented team at work and my extensive support network at home to produce better results across the board. Delegating responsibilities to your team builds trust, enhances professional development and encourages employee involvement. It is also a sign of good leadership.
Sharing your responsibilities with your loved ones is an effective way to strengthen your bond with family and friends. It also serves as a reminder to everyone involved that they are not alone.
Plan and Prioritize
Set daily goals for yourself and plan ahead. Creating a checklist for your tasks is a great way to accomplish your professional and personal responsibilities on time. It is also essential to set boundaries and carve out time for family and yourself—especially if you’re working from home.
As you enter the new year, make a resolution to eat at least one meal as a family—no matter how busy you are. This is extremely beneficial if you have children. Research shows that dinner-time conversations are a fantastic opportunity for young children to improve their vocabulary, general knowledge, and behaviour.
Though planning and daily goal-setting are essential to work-life balance, flexibility is equally important. As a parent and entrepreneur, life can be very unpredictable at times, and even the best-laid plans can fall apart. In these situations, try to remain level-headed and don’t hesitate to ask for help.
Always Make Time for Self Care
Your self-worth is not attached to the success of your business or to the different roles you play in life. So, between balancing your business and family life, don’t forget to take care of yourself.
Whether it’s going to the gym or indulging in your favourite hobby, always make time for yourself and the different things that bring you joy. Remember, you need to be physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy to build harmony between your professional and personal lives.
An orchestra is made up of more than just one violin. Similarly, I believe that our life is more than just work. We can only realize the beauty of the symphony of life when there is harmony between all the different aspects of your life—work, family, and self.
