Canada is known globally for its welcoming culture and the diversity of its people. The country has always been a top destination for immigrants seeking a better life and opportunities for their families. The federal government recognizes the importance of immigration and has set out a priority to increase the number of newcomers to the country.

The federal government’s new immigration plan calls for the admission of 1.45 million new permanent residents over the next three years, beginning with 465,000 in 2023 and reaching 500,000 in 2025. That’s compared with 341,000 in 2019.

The plan has been developed to address labour shortages in several key sectors such as healthcare, skilled trades, manufacturing and technology.

Opportunities and challenges

The federal government policy has provoked plenty of debate, not least because of its boldness. As a modern nation built on immigration, Canada has a proud history of welcoming new residents, giving people from across the globe the chance to develop their talents. The new policy is a return to Canada’s roots, and perhaps one of the biggest opportunities for growth over recent years.

Newcomers bring with them a diverse range of skills, education, and experience, which can boost the economy and create new jobs. They also bring new perspectives and ideas, charging up innovation and inspiring entrepreneurship.

By embracing the talents and contributions of newcomers, Canada can address skills shortages, enhance its economic growth and become a more prosperous and inclusive nation.

Canada’s aging population and low birth rate have created a demographic challenge. Increased immigration can help to address this developing problem by replenishing the workforce and supporting the social safety net. Properly managed immigration could help to develop an economically dynamic and equitable society that leads the world when it comes to quality of life.

While the opportunities are clear, high levels of immigration do present a range of challenges around the provision of housing, healthcare and education. Meeting these challenges will take integrated action from many stakeholders.

The need for a national conversation

While the new policy has been broadly welcomed by employers, there is a need to build public understanding and support. A national conversation is required, not least to explore how some of the challenges that increased immigration can bring when it comes to service provision.

Helping companies attract high-quality individuals from across the globe and then helping to integrate them into Canadian society should be a priority. Culturally responsive recruitment recognizes the different priorities and approaches of global applicants, and some of the challenges they may face in the Canadian workforce.

Ensuring that skills training is freely available, especially help with language and acculturation, will assist immigrants with their transition.

By encouraging open dialogue, educating people on the facts, engaging a diverse range of voices, as well as stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, and creating a safe and respectful environment, Canadians can maximize the opportunities and build a more prosperous and inclusive future for all.

The world of business is filled with possibilities that budding entrepreneurs can take advantage of. However, it can be difficult to navigate the various options available to you and choose the right path when you’re first starting out. Luckily, there are handy guides—such as this one—that you can use to create a plan of attack to guide you on your way to starting a new business venture.

Read on for tips on how best to approach a new business venture.

Analyze Your Market

Once you decide what market you wish to build your business in, it’s best to take a look at what is currently available within it. This can mean analyzing existing gaps in your target market and even looking at the top brands to see what works for them and what you could do better with your own business. By analyzing the market, you can go about refining your own business plan to make it that much more effective. Know what makes you special and capitalize on it while making sure you provide a service that is not already available–or provide it in a better way to draw in the existing business.

Assess Your Finances

A business costs money to start, and while you’ve likely already saved up some money to do so, it’s best, at this point, to look at exactly how much you have and how much you might still need. If this business venture is going to be your only source of income, ensure you have enough saved up to support yourself until you make your first profits. You should also consider if you want to look into getting a loan. Startup costs can be high, but if you plan for it properly, you won’t run into any trouble when you finally start on your new path. Remember: it’s better to save too much money than not have enough, and if you’re financially stable currently, perhaps save up a bit more as a safety net before starting the venture.

Look into Assistance

You can find help when it comes to new business ventures from many sources. This could be from federal, provincial, and municipal governments or even outsourcing parts of the business you might not have time for, such as marketing, to businesses that offer such services. There are even companies out there that specialize in helping new businesses get their footing. Remember to be practical, not proud—there’s nothing wrong with seeking out those with experience to give you a hand, especially when you’re just starting a new business venture.

Remember the Bigger Picture

Like many things, starting a new business venture can be messy. If you expect everything to go according to plan, you will face disappointment; the best entrepreneurs are aware that Plan Bs might be necessary and can pivot quickly to reduce loss. Your new venture is something you started because you’re passionate about the business itself, and showing that to your potential customers will help strengthen your business overall. Customers are looking for authenticity from businesses, and when you’re just starting out, being open and upfront can be a great way to build trust and draw in more clients.

Work frequently comes first in our lives and trumps everything else. We may be tempted to put our own well-being last in order to achieve professional success. However, striking a healthy balance between work and life—also known as work-life integration—is essential if we are to improve not only our physical, emotional, and mental health, but also our career.

When balancing the responsibilities of your workday, home life, and relationships with your family and other loved ones, work-life balance becomes an increasingly important aspect of self-care. Let’s examine the advantages of promoting a better work-life balance (for both individuals and businesses). We’ll also consider some doable suggestions for enhancing it.

Find a Job That You Love

Although working is a societal expectation, your career shouldn’t limit you. Simply put, you cannot be happy if you despise what you do. Your job doesn’t have to be perfect; rather, it just needs to be interesting enough to make you look forward to going to work each morning.

If your job is draining you and making it difficult for you to engage in the activities you enjoy outside of work, something needs to be fixed. You might be working for a toxic employer, in a toxic environment, or in a job you don’t enjoy. It’s time to look for a new job if this is the case.

Use the Word “No”

Saying no can be one of the hardest soft skills to learn and practice for any dedicated professional. Setting boundaries is an important part of the process.

Start by assessing your typical day’s demands and learning to articulate and prioritize your priorities. Using the Eisenhower Matrix for this exercise is a great idea. Saying “no” to things that are less important can free up time and energy for the things that matter most to you.

Manage Your Time

The best piece of advice people can ever receive: Make time for your priorities if you want to act on them. Use a weekly calendar to draw a “typical” week that includes time allotted for each of your priorities, such as exercise, work, family time, etc.

You can start with the “big rocks,” or the duties that are the most important and clearly defined. Decide when you will produce your best work after that. For instance, if you know that your job necessitates “deep-thinking” time, you can set aside one day each week for meeting-free work.

Prioritize Your Health

Taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental health should be your top priority. Fit therapy appointments into your schedule, even if it means skipping your evening spin class or leaving work early. Don’t be afraid to call in sick when you’re having a bad day if you’re dealing with a chronic illness. You cannot improve if you overwork yourself; as a result, you may need to take additional days off in the future.
